So, like the rest of the known world, I downloaded the new Safari 4 beta the other day. It’s nice; dead fast, some slick new interface features, and it renders the Guardian homepage twice as fast as the last version. So all good. Even the new “tabs at the top” feature, whilst a bit weird, is something I can live with.

What I’m having real issues with though is the lack of a reload button. As a designer/developer type, I reload pages all the time, and I often click to do that, rather than use the keyboard shortcuts. Every time I wanted to do that for the last few days, my mouse has strayed to the place where my old reload button was, only to be thwarted by its absence:

Where the hell is it?

So, I found it. Eventually. It’s in the location bar, away from all the other buttons you might want to click, just for your convenience. And it’s such a handy size too, check it:

Ahh, where else?

I’m trying to like the new Safari, but this is a real killer for me. If Firefox was a bit better and more mac-friendly, I might even be tempted to jump ship. That’s how much this is bugging me. And no, you can’t customise the toolbar to add it back in. Maybe in the final version. Please. Pretty please. With a cherry on top.

agreed. i *always* use forward, back, and reload, but i *never* use the add-bookmark button, but now i have add-bookmark where reload used to be, and since i can’t get rid of add-bookmark, i keep almost clicking it — if at least i could get rid of that then it might be easier to retrain myself. but, firefox is better for web development anyway so i will probably switch to that (in no small part because it’s important for me to see the full page title, which in safari 4 is usually truncated).

I never use “Add Bookmark” either, Mark. I use del.icio.us these days to keep bookmarks altogether. I don’t know why I persevere with Safari for web dev. I think it’s because FF3 is so clunky on the mac, and because the built-in web inspector’s so nice in Safari (Very good in S4 btw).

I tell you what though, I’m loving the new auto complete with titles and urls. And the Top Sites thing is kind of funky. If I could have the old tabs, and a proper reload/stop button I’d be happy as larry!

The reload is apparently in the address field all the way on the right

you have no idea how much i want to punch safari 4 in the face… the blue loading thing that keeps popping up is so bad

In response to this post, I note that final version has dispensed with the “ontop” tabs, which is a blessing, and they’ve drawn more attention to the stop/reload bit too. Better.
